I bought a new cord and attempted again to rewire the lamp last night. Success! I think the first was speaker wire or something. The second one, the one that worked, was just slightly fatter. Lesson learned: Do not let the dude from plumbing cut cord for you.

On the really old lamps I use silk wrapped cord. Getting hard to find but it is out there.
I love that lamp and would have bid on it too.
I had to get some major nicotine out of some barkcloth once. Took soaking it in all fabric bleach for a couple of days, but the backgroud turned out to be white instead of yellow. Ick.
